Using the Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Jig
I found using the Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Jig straight forward, the basic steps are as follows:
- Set the slides on each side of the jig to the corresponding thickness of your material.
- Position the jig on the end of the piece of wood and clamp it in place.
- Set the depth of the pocket hole by fixing the collar to the drill bit at the appropriate position using the guide inside the case.
- Then you are ready to drill. When drilling guide the drill bit into the drill guides, then start your drill.
- Slowly push forward on the drill so that the drill begins to cut into the wood then pull back to allow the wood chips out then continue to push the drill bit in, repeat this until you have completely drilled the pocket hole and the drill bit is stoppeed by the drill bit collar.
Completing the pocket hole joint is easy:
- Clamp your pieces of wood together in the correct orientation for your given project.
- Select the correct pocket hole screw based on the thicknedd of your material and the type of wood (there are fine thread screws for hardwoods, and coarse thread screws foe pine and other soft woods).
- Screw the screw into the pocket hole to complete the joint. I recommend using a drill on a low torque setting, an impact driver is overkill and could damage the pocket hole.
Almost any clamp could be used when using the Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Jig but I also chose to purchase a Kreg 3" face clamp, it has come in very handy and also works very well.
As above to complete the pocket hole joint you will need screws of the appropriate type, as I waas going to be using 19mm (3/4 inch) material on an upcomming project I ordered some 32mm (1 1/4 inch) screws.
